Safety First: Lessons from the Field

safety in landscaping Apr 18, 2024

As a contractor with over 20 years of experience in the green industry, I've seen firsthand the dangers that come with this line of work. From mowers flinging rocks at high speeds to excavators tipping over on job sites, there's no shortage of hazards out there. That's why on my latest podcast episode, I really wanted to drive home the importance of safety.

We heard from one guest about how even something as routine as driving to and from jobs each day is risky, with distracted motorists posing a threat to those of us working alongside busy roads. It's so easy to take for granted that we'll make it home safely to our families each night. But as another speaker pointed out, no one has promised us that will be the case. Their powerful message really struck a chord.

In addition to safety, I also chatted with my wife Brittany about the value of appreciating each moment we have with our loved ones. As business owners, it's all too easy to leave an argument unresolved in our haste to get to the next task. But we've learned over the years to make sure any partings are on a kind note, just in case it ends up being our last interaction.

For contractors and their crews, I hope the lessons from this podcast will serve as a reminder of the importance of going home safely each day. But the messages of cherishing time with family and resolving conflicts positively also ring true for anyone balancing work and personal life. Safety should always be the top priority.
